Mala Novel By Nimra Ahmed
The date was April 5th. The city was Islamabad. The time was 8:00 in the morning.
Our story begins with an unexpected phone call that Kaif Jamal received that morning.
These days, Kaif slept through the mornings like an entrepreneur who wins the day by staying asleep. From noon till dawn, he would sit in front of his laptop, looking for work. That morning too, he was deep in sleep when the buzzing sound of the phone connected to his half-asleep mind.
The number was unknown, and the voice on the other end was stern. It was a middle-aged man who had once been his boss.
He said that his former boss, who had recently returned from the UK, wanted to meet him. He had a job offer for Kaif.
- “Who is with you?”
- Kaif asked while stifling a yawn, rubbing his eyes, and checking the time.
- “Maher Fareed.”
- “But I don’t know any Maher Fareed.”
- “You will,” the man replied, and ended the call.
About an hour and a half later, Kaif and I were on our way to the location sent by the unknown caller. On the way, Kaif tried to look up Maher Fareed using Google. There were many people with that name, but none matched someone from England. Only one mention appeared — on a Facebook group — which Kaif had once seen while researching that consultant.
