The novel Guman tells the story of Ume Hani and Farhad. The plot starts when Ume Hani travels to Islamabad from Karachi to stay with her aunt. Living in the house across the street is Farhad, who looks like a foreigner since he has spent most of his life living abroad.
Ume Hani happens to overhear Farhad’s phone conversation when she goes to his house to deliver some food after a neighborhood get-together. During the call, she hears him use the word “blast” and starts to think he is a foreign agent organizing a terrorist attack in Pakistan.
She shares what she suspects with her cousin Nageen, and they decide to follow him to get some proof to show the authorities. In reality, Farhad is actually the son of their uncle Hassan, who had moved to England when he was young. Farhad came back to Pakistan to surprise his family, and the “blast” he mentioned was all a part of the surprise he was putting together for them.
